Charles Sobhraj – the psychopath serial killer set to be released from Nepal prison 2022

News Update 

The Top court of Nepal has ordered to release the French psychopath serial killer, Charles Sobhraj. Charles is primary accused of multiple murders in Asian countries including India, Thailand, Nepal etc. Since 2003 Charles Sobhraj has been in Himalayi Ganrajya jail in Nepal on the charges of killing North American tourists. As per Nepal penal law if a prisoner has served 20 years of life imprisonment they should be released on medical grounds and exhibition of good behavior inside jail. He has served 95% of his punishment term in Nepal, hence the verdict was made.

Modus Operandi

There is a famous saying from Indian Blockbuster Amitabh Bachhan starrer movie “Don”, that “Cops of 11 countries have been waiting to trap DON but it is just not difficult but impossible to catch hold of DON”. This statement applies perfectly in real in the case of Charles, the mysterious serial killer, that 9 countries have been waiting to get hold of to solve horrendous unsolved murder mysteries executed by him in those countries. Till date there is no actual number as to how many total murders have been committed by him who is otherwise known as Serpent and the famous Bikini Killer. Even Charles has admitted that he himself is not sure of the number of murders done by him.

He worked in a strange modus operandi that different police teams were able to decode much later. He would befriend visitors, tourists, and charm them with sophisticated looks and later overdose with drugs and rob them. They either disappeared or were found dead in a suspicious condition due to overdose of drugs. Charles was well dressed, very well-mannered person, a typical prototypical profile that our society generally treat as respectful person. People were easily misleaded by his external appearance and attracted by his presence and persona.

Who is Charles Sobhraj?

Charles was born in city of Ho Chi Minh of Vietnam in 1944. His mother was of Vietnamese origin and father was from India. His father refused to accept him upon his birth, which reasoned into his mother flying to France with Charles to start a new journey. There, his mother fell in love with a Lieutenant who accepted both. He got Charles name from his French father and got a citizenship of France.

His Crime Affair – Quick Recap

Charles was first jailed in a case of robbery in the year of 1963 in France. His crime journey started from this jail where he met rich bureaucrats and powerful people of France. He observed and learned the behavior and habits of people in high class society and managed to learn different international languages with great command. Charles in many documentaries have conveyed that if someone talks with him once, it is guaranteed that they will be convinced easily, he was that confident on his command on languages and convincing skills.

Thereafter, he entered the world of Drugs and started smuggling drugs in farthest to closest territories within his proximity. During this period, he dated a Parsee lady Chantal Compagnon and later married her . Charles, Chantal and charles sobhraj daughter moved to India. Chantal Compagnon is Charles Sobhraj wife. They joined a French society in India, and his wife changed her name to Usha right here.

In India, Charles knitted his crime network quite easily with learnings from France. In 1970, he started smuggling weapons within India. In 1973, Charles was first caught in connection with Robbery from Hotel Ashoka in Chakanyapuri area of Delhi in India. Soon after being caught, he managed to elope from Delhi police.

From India, he went to Afghanistan where he started robbing tourists by giving overdose of Drugs. In the process of robbing, he would ensure to take away their Passport and Visas to make use in movement from one place to another.

From Afghanistan, Charles moved to Iran, but alone as his wife left him to return France. He used his survival instincts and Weapon and Drugs gambling techniques to connect with people in Iran as well.

The Bikini Killer 

Charles moved to Thailand from Iran in 1975. It is here, his Murder series started. In a A listed resort in Pataya, 2 dead bodies of women were found due to overdose of drugs. Multiple other women dead bodies were also found in Thailand beach and strangely all these bodies were found in Bikini. The reason identified in death was overdose of drugs and had a flower shaped symbol in the bodies of deceased. The Thailand Police gave a new name “the Bikini killer” to serial killer (Charles) and started to track him. Roughly 24 people were killed to death by Charles through drug overdose due to his psychopathy till 1976 as per reports. When Thailand Police tightened security policies within country and plan to trap him, he flees to Nepal from Thailand.

The murder affair continues in Nepal. He murders one Canadian and one North American tourist in Nepal. When he finds out that Nepal police is on lookout for him, he flied to India again.

Jailed in India

Back in India again, Charles started playing a Tour guide to a French students’ tourist group. He gave them Drugs in the name of dysentery medicines. Most of them faint but two of the students in group survived the attack and informed India Police about Charles. Police of India caught him but as there were no murder charges against him, he was sentenced for 12 years imprisonment from 1976. After 10 years in Tihar prison, Charles managed to break the prison and run away. Later it was realized by India police that Charles broke the prison intentionally to re-return to Indian jail with extended duration as he felt safe inside it and wanted to stay way from Thailand police for murder charges. Interestingly he conducted a birthday party inside the Indian jail after convincing the police authorities and fed everyone with food mixed with sleeping pills which he brought inside with the help of a friend(outside) and fled after everyone fell asleep.

Jailed in Nepal

In Feb 1997, India had handed over Charles to France after completing his extended punishment term in Indian Tihar jail. After moving to France, Charles gave interview to France reporter (charles sobhraj interview)with a deal to compensate him with 15 million $ (US). He gets interviewed by different writers, film makers back in France to cover him in web series, movies, books. In 2003 Charles became overconfident and thought he should start his previous deeds and went to Nepal only to restart his old smuggling work. In Nepal, he got arrested by their Police over quarrel with a casino owner. Nepal police found out he was same guy involved in murders of couple of tourists of NA and Canada in 1976 and convicts him for that case and forward to court. The court had sentenced him 20 years imprisonment of life in 2003.

What Happens Next 

The Police of Thailand have been waiting for Charles’s release from jail and possibly will try to catch hold to question him for committed murders in Thailand. Not just Thailand, India, France police have also been waiting for him. Although the Nepal court has decided to release him, but the Nepal police has refused to release him till now.
